In the beginning was nothing.
But not “nothing”…
No “Thing” …
Pure Intelligence …
Endless possibility.
This possibility exists in “the Void”… what some might regard as “The Black”… darkness. The Void is a powerful place…. A place we avoid. (We avoid The Void).
Yet think of Spring in your garden…. the black soil, filled with potential. We plant seeds and we watch them sprout and grow. The soil does not know what seed we plant. The outcome is inherent in the seed itself. Within the seed is the wisdom of the plant, and its ‘becoming’. That seed goes into the dark soil, and its inner intention is operated on by a Force. And the truth is, we still don’t really know how that works. When we cut open a seed, it is filled with white ‘stuff’. We know that there is an action between the soil, the sun, the water, the seed, etc…. And then, there is ‘a miracle’… the ‘idea’ of plant, contained within the seed, begins to sprout!
The Science of Mind author, Ernest Holmes wrote, “The profound thought of all ages has stood in awe of Life itself, realizing that here is a power and potentiality, the highest possibilities of which the human intellect cannot fathom.” This is amazing! I know I stand in awe in my garden every year, watching the potential of Life bursting forth.
There is always a dark time, as part of the process. Winter is a time of Life going back within itself… back to “The Void”. In the Fall, plants die and rot back into the Earth, and it appears as if “nothing” is happening. But so much is happening.
Do you know that different species of bamboo take a varying number of years to reach maximum size? Some can take anywhere from 4 - 15 years! And at first… for many years… ‘nothing’ much seems to be happening on the outside. On the inside, however, there is much work being done. Then, when the year of maturity arrives, the plant bursts forth in noticeable growth!
Indian mystic, Osho, taught, “Only nothingness can be infinite; somethingness is bound to be finite. Only out of nothingness is an infinite expanse of life or existence possible, not out of somethingness. The Infinite Universe is not a somebody: It is nobody or, more correctly, nobodiness. The Infinite Universe is not something: It is nothing… no-thingness. It is a creative void.”
“Never for a single moment think that nothingness is a negative state, an absence. NO. Nothingness is simply no-thing-ness. Things disappear; only the Ultimate Substance remains. Forms disappear, only the formless remains. Definitions disappear, the undefined remains.”
Interestingly, I love to play with tarot-like inspiration cards, and lately, I have repeatedly pulled the card: No-Thingness. Hmmm…
The Centre is moving. We have sold the building and we move out January 31st. (come to our special closing Ceremony on Sunday the 30th, at 7 pm)
We, at the Centre, have a seed of an idea. But, we are entering “The Void”. The idea has not sprouted into form just yet. We are harvesting our last crop with the sale of our building. That old form is now ‘dying’ into Infinite Potential. We spent the earlier part of last Sunday packing boxes, cleaning, taking away recycling…. We are actively moving into “The Void”, and it is uncomfortable because we can’t see what we don’t know. We can’t yet see our sprout.
Essayist and Philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s wisdom is useful at this time. He wrote, “Spirit creates (that behind ‘nature’). Throughout nature, spirit is present; it does not act upon us from without, (that is, in space and time), but ‘spiritually’, or through ourselves: therefore, that ‘spirit’ does not build up nature around us, but puts it forth through us, [just] as the life of the tree puts forth new branches and leaves through the pores of the old. As a plant upon the earth, so a person rests upon the bosom of the Universe; they are nourished by unfailing fountains, and draw, at their need, inexhaustible power. Who can set bounds to the possibilities of humanity? Humanity has access to the entire mind of the The Universe. Infinite Intelligence, is Itself the creator in the finite.”
Ernest Holmes’ teachings elaborate on this point: “The Law of Life through which we operate is Infinite, but we appear to be finite; that is, we have not yet evolved to a complete understanding of ourselves. We are unfolding from a Limitless Potential but can bring into our experience only that which we can conceive. There is no limit to the Law [of the Universe], but there appears to be a limit to our understanding of It. As our understanding unfolds, our possibilities of attainment increase.”
This is the nature of who we are. We come from no-thing-ness. We create from “the Void”. Infinite Possibility exists.
Think about a time when we didn’t realize that there was electricity on Earth as we currently recognize it. Humankind was simple, and lived without what we now call ‘power’: electricity or light. But the potential to utilize that power was ALWAYS there. The Laws that govern electricity always existed. In order to make use of that power, however, we first had to ‘discover’ electricity and learn how to work with it. Yet, whether we saw it or not, It always existed in the void of Possibility.
What else exists in that void that we have not yet revealed? Oh so much!! the possibilities are INFINITE!! But, we do not know what we do not yet know.
So, we enter “The Void”, patiently knowing there IS something evolving through us. As a Centre, we plant what we know to plant, we tend to what needs tending, and then we wait and trust. We move forward with open eyes, watchful for sprouts.
Today, in beginning our move-out process, we harvested our garden. Now we gestate in “The Void” of ‘becoming’. A new ‘miracle’ is already planted and in motion through us.
