The cheerful Shasta daisy is a classic perennial that tend to form clumps that are 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. They bear all-white daisy petals, yellow disk florets, and contrasting glossy, dark green leaves. Shasta daisies are terrific as cut flowers, as their blooms can last a week or more in arrangements.
Borage (sometimes called Star Flower) is an edible annual herb, with lovely blue flowers and both culinary and medicinal uses. Borage is a fast-growing herb with culsters of starry blue flowers that’s beloved by bees! It’s a wonderful companion plant for tomatoes, cabbage, strawberries and squash, helping to reduce tomato hornworm and cabbage worm damage.
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) may drive your cat wild but when it comes to humans, a tea made from its dried or fresh leaves is actually quite calming. A perennial that is easy to grow from seed, catnip grows to be about 3 feet tall, likes full sun, and does well even in poor dry soil. It is most potent used fresh but to save some for the winter, harvest the top third of the plant before it blooms and hang to dry. Let a few branches blossom for the bees. They love it too!
